Economic activity is concentrated in the Randstad area

The Netherlands has a population of around 16 million, representing some 0,3% of the world?s population. Economically, The Netherlands ranks among the worlds top 10 countries.

Most Dutch economic activity is concentrated in the so-called Randstad, the area encompassed by the cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague. Service industries are a major pillar of the economy in this area, particularly distribution services for Germany and the rest of Western Europe. The main economic centers in the Randstad are the Amsterdam Airport Schiphol area and Europoort in Rotterdam, the world?s largest port.

The Dutch government has assigned key roles to both centers in further strengthening the Dutch position in the west European transport and service sectors. Employment in de Schiphol area has risen substantially faster than in Europoort in recent years.
